View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Gemmell was a fire lookout tower in Koochiching County, Minnesota.1 The county's survey of its towers lists it as tower number 82, erected in 1930.1 It was a 94-foot ladder tower, possibly an Aermotor design.1

The tower stood in the hamlet of Gemmell, beside an old rail line between Bemidji and International Falls.1 The survey lists the owner as "Mn MFS," which it explains as the Minnesota Forest Service, now the Forestry Division of the state Department of Natural Resources.1

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.2 The county survey says it was removed.1

The old rail line is now the Blue Ox Trail, which follows the old rail grade south from International Falls through Northome.1,3 Koochiching County gave the trail, and the Northome Ridge Riders look after it.3 The state's trail page calls it an unpaved route for snowmobiles and off-road vehicles that runs northeast to International Falls.4 The trail is open to ATVs in summer and to snowmobiles in winter.3

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the tower site.
