View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount Weber, also called the Greenwood Lake lookout, was a fire tower in Lake County, Minnesota.1

It was tower number 142, a 56-foot Aermotor ladder tower erected in 1925.1,2 The county list gives the owner as Mn MFS, the Minnesota Forest Service, which is now the Department of Natural Resources' forestry division.1,3 Survey notes from 1934 describe the Mount Weber station as sitting under a fire lookout tower.1

The alternate name points to Greenwood Lake, and Wikipedia traces that lake's name to George C. Greenwood, a pioneer merchant.4

The county list says the tower was removed and that it may have passed to the U.S. Forest Service.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as gone.5

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the public can visit it.
