Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Nimrod Fire Tower stands at the Department of Natural Resources forestry station in Nimrod, Wadena County, Minnesota.1,2 The Minnesota Division of Forestry built it in 1928.1,3
It is a 94-foot Aermotor ladder tower with a 6-foot-8-inch octagonal cab, reached by a vertical ladder.1,3 The National Historic Lookout Register says it is the first tower of this unusual style to be listed there.1 A 1981 survey note in a Wadena County tower list calls the tower "about 100 feet high," so the sources do not fully agree on its height.3
The Register accepted the tower on May 14, 1997, on the nomination of Curt Cogan of the Forest Fire Lookout Association.1
In 2021 the tower was still in use for fire watch.2 NPR's feature that year says it is staffed regularly during the fire season, and that it is one of the few towers in the state still in use for spotting fires. Lookouts use an Osborne Fire Finder, a sighting tool from the 1920s, to help pin down where a fire is.2
The sources I read do not name any particular fire that the tower helped catch.
The tower has stayed in service.3,4 The Wadena County list says it "has been continuously used since then," meaning since 1928. The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as standing.3,4
NPR reported in 2021 that one northern Minnesota fire tower "reserves itself for lookouts only, not thrill seekers."2 Its Nimrod passage follows that line, so this is probably the Nimrod tower, though NPR does not name it in that sentence. The Register names the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as administrator.1 I found no public visiting rules, so check with the DNR before any visit, and do not try the ladder without permission.
