Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Pomroy Lookout Tower stands near Pomroy Lake in Kanabec County, Minnesota.1 The lake and the township both carry the name of John Pomroy, an early lumberman whose logging camp stood on the shore.2

A county survey of the towers lists the owner as Mn MFS, which it explains as the Minnesota Forest Service, now the forestry division of the state Department of Natural Resources.1 The same survey gives 1963 as the date and describes a 95-foot stairway tower of Aermotor design with a square cab.1 It also says the tower is under the Moose Lake Forestry Station.1 The sources we read name no one who staffed the tower and no fire it watched.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as standing.3 A visitor's account on kjackson.us says the tower still stands, that the stair treads show decay, and that the road in is a sea of mud.2

We found no public access rules and no current owner information. Because the visit account reports decaying stair treads, do not climb the tower, and ask the managing station before you visit.
