View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Remer had two fire lookouts in the same area, about two miles apart, southwest of town off Highway 200.1 The first, likely an 81-foot ladder tower, was probably relocated to the Blueberry site once the second went up.1 The second went up in 1938 as a 100-foot Aermotor stairway tower.1,2

The Remer Ranger District, set up as an administrative unit in 1935, was headquartered at a station in town.3 After the Chippewa National Forest grew southward, this tower became a primary U.S. Forest Service lookout, and the Lima lookout to its southeast was eliminated.1

The station typically had three full-time employees.3 A former assistant ranger who worked there from 1959 to 1961 recalled that two "tower men" staffed the lookouts in the warmer months.3 When fire danger ran high, lookouts covered two towers and kept up regular radio contact with the district office.3

The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Minnesota list marks this tower as gone, and it marks the first Remer lookout as gone too.4

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the ground is open to visitors.
