Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Scenic's tower went up in 1934. It is a 100-foot steel stairway tower in Scenic State Park, in Itasca County, Minnesota.1,2 The A-Z list describes its design as an International Derrick stairway tower and says a nearby CCC forestry camp erected it that year.2 We found no account of why it was placed where it stands, and no record of the crew beyond that camp.

The park also has a CCC-era service yard on the western shore of Sandwick Lake, with buildings dated 1934 and 1935.3

The sources do not agree on the height. The Central US page and the A-Z text both say 100 feet, but the A-Z table's height column reads 86.1,2

In the sources we could read, we found no record of who staffed the tower or which fires it watched.

The A-Z list says a study of the tower's historical significance was carried out in 2019.2

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as standing.4

The A-Z list says the tower is not open for climbing, although the Fire Tower Trail leads to it.2 If you visit, stay on the trail, do not climb, and ask park staff about the tower before you go.
