What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sugarbush was a fire tower in Clearwater County.1 The county list also calls it the Rice Lake Lookout Tower.1

Forest Lookouts dates the tower to 1937 and gives its height as 80 feet, with an external ladder.2 The county list agrees on the date and height, and gives the owner as the Minnesota Forest Service.1

A 1941 survey note describes the tower as steel, with an enclosed crow's nest.1 A 1960 note in the county list gives its overall height as 90 feet, which does not match the 80 feet given for the 1937 build.1 The sources do not explain the difference.

The county list says the tower was removed.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as gone.3 We found no source that describes what remains at the site, or whether the public can visit it.
