Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Summit lookout is an Aermotor ladder tower in Clearwater County, Minnesota, just southeast of Bagley.1,2 The county list gives its height as 94 feet, but a 1941 survey note in the same entry says the tower is about 100 feet high. The same note also appears under the LaSalle entry, so it may not belong to Summit.1

The sources disagree about when it went up. The county list's text says it was erected here in 1928, while the county table and the Central US Lookouts page both give 1938.1,2

The county list also calls it the Bagley tower, numbers it 48 on the state list, and describes it as a very old Minnesota tower.1

The list records the owner as the Minnesota Forest Service, which it says is now the Department of Natural Resources' Forestry Division.1 We found no record of who staffed the tower or which fires it watched.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as standing.3

We found no statement about public access in the sources we could read. Anyone planning a visit should ask the landowner or managing agency first, and should not climb the tower without permission.
