Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The White Pine lookout went up in 1933 as an Aermotor tower 1,2. The county survey describes it as a 94-foot ladder tower, while its 1960 notes give an overall height of 100 feet and a metal observation room at the top 2. The two heights differ, and the survey does not say why 2.

The lookout stands along County 2, east of Dad's Corner, in Aitkin County 2. The county survey lists the Minnesota Forest Service as owner, a body that is now the forestry division of the state Department of Natural Resources 2.

I did not find a record of who staffed the White Pine lookout or of any fire it spotted, so that part of its story is still open.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association list shows it standing 3. The most recent on-site description I found is the 1960 survey 2, so its present condition is not confirmed.

The survey describes it as easy to locate and enjoy, and notes that it is also a state ARMER site 2. It does not say whether the tower can be climbed 2, so check with the owner before any visit, and do not climb without clear permission.
