Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Doniphan lookout stands on the Doniphan Towersite in Ripley County, which the Missouri Department of Conservation administers.1,2

The register gives the tower's height as 100 feet, an Aermotor LS40 model put up in 1958 and 1959.1 The Forest Lookouts site records that a garage was built at the towersite in fiscal 1964 to 1965.2

In February 1985 a tornado destroyed the tower.2 The Forest Lookouts site says it was then rebuilt, but it gives no date for the rebuilding and no details of the new structure.2

As of 2023 the register said the tower was used for fire detection only in peak fire season and was not open to the public.1 It also calls the structure sound, noting that some wooden steps had recently been replaced.1

The department's towersite page carries a notice that the tower is shut to visitors for repairs. The notice has no date, so we cannot say how long it has been in place.3 We found no record that the tower has reopened, so please do not climb it while it is closed.

The register added the tower on December 31, 2023, on the nomination of Jerry Lutes.1
