Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Conehatta Lookout Tower stands in Newton County, Mississippi, at an elevation of 582 feet, or 177 meters.1 The National Historic Lookout Register lists it as US 1738 and MS 55, and it accepted the tower on July 9, 2023, on the nomination of Jason Johns.1
The register lists the build date as unknown.1 Its writer could not find a maker's label, so the maker is a belief rather than a confirmed fact. The writer thinks it is an Aermotor MC-39 and says it stands 120 feet tall.1 The register also records a site visit dated 7/1/23.1
The register says the Mississippi Forestry Commission administers the tower.1 A state list of public lands dated July 29, 2020, includes a "Conehatta Tower" under the Forestry Commission.2 That fits the register, although the list gives no height, date or condition.
We found no record of who staffed the tower or which fires it watched. Nothing we read says whether the public may visit or climb it. Anyone interested should contact the Forestry Commission before going near the site, and should not climb the tower.
