Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Dumas Lookout Tower is a 100-foot Aermotor tower in Tippah County, Mississippi, at about 675 feet, or 206 meters.1 On its parallel staircase, the register counts 14 landings and 15 flights, and says the bottom flights are gone.1

The register calls it an Aermotor.1 Aermotor also made fire lookout towers from galvanized steel.2 Wikipedia says hundreds of one 7-by-7 model were used in the southeastern United States.2 The sources we read do not say whether this tower is that model.1,2

The register gives no build date, and we found none in the sources we read.1 The register names the Mississippi Forestry Commission as administering the site, yet says the commission has stopped using it.1

The register's writer visited on July 17, 2022.1 The tower was registered as US 1684, MS 45 the next day, on the nomination of Jason Johns.1

The register does not say who owns the site today or whether visitors may enter.1 We found no account of the fires it watched or the people who staffed it.1 Anyone interested should confirm who controls the land before going there, and should not climb the tower.
