Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Flintkote (II) Lookout Tower is an 80-foot Aermotor tower in Kemper County, Mississippi, at about 579 feet, or 176 meters.1 The register describes a diagonal staircase and gives no build date.1

Aermotor also made fire lookout towers from galvanized steel.2 Wikipedia says hundreds of one 7-by-7 model were used in the southeastern United States, but nothing we read says this tower is that model.2,1

The register's "Administered by" line names the Mississippi Forestry Commission.1 The description, though, says a timber company owns the site now.1 The two do not agree, and the register does not say when ownership changed.1 The commission was created in 1926 and is authorized to prevent, control and extinguish forest fires.3

The register listed the tower as US 1668, MS 32 on July 10, 2022, nominated by Jason Johns.1 The site visit it describes took place on July 3, 2022, and we found no later report.1

We found no record of who staffed the tower, which fires it watched, or whether visitors may go there.1 The register says a timber company owns the land, so anyone interested should ask the owner before going on the site and should not climb the tower.1
