Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Midway Lookout Tower stands in Yazoo County, Mississippi, according to the National Historic Lookout Register.1 The register gives the registration number US 1741, MS 58, and says the Mississippi Forestry Commission administers the tower.1 It was registered on July 9, 2023, with Jason Johns as the nominator.1

Wikipedia lists the community of Midway, in Yazoo County, as unincorporated. It places the community on Mississippi Highway 433, roughly 12.6 miles east-northeast of Yazoo City.2 The sources I read do not say how the tower relates to that community beyond the shared name.

The register describes the tower as a 100-foot Aermotor LS-40 and gives its elevation as 398 feet (121 m).1 OpenStreetMap lists the tower as a lattice observation tower but gives its elevation as 110 metres.3 The two sources disagree on elevation, and this story uses the register's figure.

The register lists the build date as unknown.1 I found no other account of when the tower went up, who put it there, or whether it has been moved, and nothing about its fires or staffing.

The register notes a site visit on July 2, 2023.1 I could not tell whether the public can reach the tower, and I found no later report of its condition. Please check with the Mississippi Forestry Commission before planning a trip, and do not climb the tower without permission.
