Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Noxubee Lookout Tower stands in Noxubee County, Mississippi, on a site that was once a county work center for the Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC).1 The register describes an MC-39 Aermotor tower that is 100 feet tall.1 The MC-39 was one of several Aermotor lookout models sold at a range of set heights.2

The register gives no build date and lists it as unknown.1 It puts the elevation at 249 feet, or 76 meters, while OpenStreetMap gives 74 meters. We have not settled that small gap.1,3 OpenStreetMap maps the structure as a lattice observation tower too.3 A lookout history site lists a Noxubee entry under Noxubee County, and the part we read gives no further detail.4 We found no record of staff or of any fire connected with this tower.

The register was filed on July 4, 2022, on the nomination of Jason Johns.1 It lists the MFC as a cooperator and says the site is now privately owned.1 It does not say when the work center closed or when the land changed hands.

Today the tower sits on private land.1 We found no information about public access, so ask the owner before any visit. Please do not climb it.
