Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Phoenix Lookout Tower is in Yazoo County, Mississippi, at an elevation of 377 feet, or 115 meters.1 It is a 100-foot Aermotor LS-40, and the National Historic Lookout Register lists it as US 1735, MS 52.1
We found no build date. The register gives the year built as unknown, and the other sources we searched did not supply one.1 The register describes the tower's administration as private, and lists the Mississippi Forestry Commission only as a cooperator.1 It does not say who staffed the tower or which fires it watched.1
Jason Johns nominated the tower, and the register recorded it on July 6, 2023.1 The register's entry, tied to a site visit on July 1, 2023, describes the tower as privately owned.1 Since that visit, we found no record of the tower's condition or of any change in its ownership.
Because the tower is privately owned, we cannot confirm whether the public may visit.1 Anyone interested should ask the landowner before going near it, and should not climb it.
