Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Poplar Creek Lookout Tower is in Montgomery County, Mississippi, at an elevation of 549 feet, or 167 meters.1 The register describes a 100-foot Aermotor with a straight staircase inside it, and lists the tower as US 1664, MS 29.1

The register gives no build date and lists the year built as unknown.1 It names the Mississippi Forestry Commission as the administrator.1 The commission's own website says it works to protect forestland from wildfires, but the page we read does not mention this tower.2

Jason Johns nominated the tower, and the register recorded it on July 10, 2022.1 The register's entry, tied to a site visit on July 9, 2022, says the commission has left the site and that a timber company may own it.1 The register still names the commission as administrator, so the record disagrees with itself on who runs the site.1

We found no record of who staffed the tower, which fires it watched, or its condition after the 2022 visit. Ownership is uncertain, so check with the Mississippi Forestry Commission or the landowner before going onto the land, and do not climb the tower.1
