Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Providence Lookout Tower is in Holmes County, Mississippi, at an elevation of 381 feet, or 116 meters.1 The National Historic Lookout Register lists it as US 1734, MS 51 and describes a 100-foot Aermotor LS-40.1 The register says the Mississippi Forestry Commission administers it.1

The register gives no build date and lists the year built as unknown. We found no other source that gives one.1

Jason Johns nominated the tower, and the register recorded it on July 5, 2023.1 The register's entry, tied to a site visit on July 2, 2023, says thick woods surround the tower and no clear path leads to its base. The writer could not reach it on foot.1

The register does not say who staffed the tower, which fires it watched, or what condition it is in today. We found no other source on those points.

Because the tower is in dense woods with no clear path to it, a visit could be hard even with permission. Check with the Mississippi Forestry Commission before going there, and do not climb the tower.1
