Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Sandy Mountain Lookout Tower is in Calhoun County, Mississippi.1 The National Historic Lookout Register gives its elevation as 422 feet (129 meters).1 It lists a 100-foot Aermotor with stairs set on a diagonal.1

The register lists the build date as unknown and names no builder.1 It does not say which fires the tower watched, or who staffed it.1

The register recorded the tower on July 21, 2022, as US 1687, MS 47, on the nomination of Jason Johns.1 The Mississippi Forestry Commission administers the site.1 The only site visit the register records is dated 2/5/22.1

The sources we read do not say whether the tower still stands, or whether it has been moved, burned or taken down.1 The register gives no access information, so it does not show whether the public may visit.1 The Mississippi Forestry Commission, which administers the site, would be the agency to ask.1
