Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Tunica Lookout Tower stands in Tunica County, Mississippi, at about 188 feet (57 meters) above sea level.1 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as a 100-foot tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab, made by Aermotor.1 The Register says it is a Mississippi Forestry Commission site and lists the Commission as a cooperator.1

The Register also notes that the stairs have steel treads rather than the wooden ones it calls typical.1 The Register does not say when the tower was built, and it lists the build date as unknown.1 We found no record of who built it, who staffed it, or any fire it watched.

The Register added the tower on June 18, 2022, as US 1602 (MS 7), on the nomination of Jason Johns.1

The Register describes the tower in the present tense, but it gives no visit date and we found no later report about its condition.1 We also found no record of a sale, a move, or a decommissioning. The Register does not describe public access.1 Anyone interested should ask the Forestry Commission before going to the site, and should not climb a tower without permission.
