Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission put up a lookout tower in Washington County, on a road running between Wilmot and the Swiftwater Church.1 A Delta Democrat item dated October 18, 1961, reproduced on the Forest Lookouts site, reports that the tower had been completed.1 The same item describes a small cabin on top, with glass windows and a trapdoor that swings up. It says the tower would be used in fire season, November to March, to watch for fires across the county.1

The register describes a 100-foot Aermotor tower.2 It gives the build date as unknown, so the 1961 item is the only dated source for construction.2,1

The register spells the name Wilmont, while the 1961 item and the Forest Lookouts page use Wilmot.2,1

The register entry rests on a site visit recorded on July 8, 2022, and the tower was registered on July 10, 2022.2 The sources I could read give no condition after that visit, so the tower's present state is not confirmed.2,1

Today the register says the site appears to be privately owned.2 Treat it as off limits unless the owner gives permission, and do not climb the tower.
