Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Winborn Lookout Tower is in Marshall County, Mississippi, within the Holly Springs National Forest.1,2 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as a 100 ft Aermotor tower, administered by the USFS.1 OpenStreetMap tags it as an observation tower with lattice construction.3
The sources do not record when it was built. The Register gives the build date as unknown, and the other page I read does not offer one.1,2
I found no account of who staffed the tower, which fires it watched, or whether it was moved, abandoned or restored. Two web searches turned up nothing about this lookout.
The Register lists the tower as registered on June 23, 2022, as US 1612, MS 11, on a nomination by someone listed only as Jason.1 It gives the site elevation as 514 feet (157 meters), while OpenStreetMap gives 145 meters.1,3 The sources do not say which figure is more accurate.
The Register's page carries a photograph credited to Matthew Nichols and dated May 2024. That is the most recent sign of the tower in these sources, and none of them says whether it still stands.1,2,3
The sources do not say whether the public may climb or visit the tower. Contact the Forest Service before any visit, and do not climb the tower if it is closed or posted off limits.
