Story
Researched 4 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Woodland Lookout Tower stands in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, at an elevation of about 577 feet.1 It is a 100-foot steel Aermotor tower, with a staircase that runs up through the middle of the structure rather than zig-zagging around the outside.1 It is administered by the Mississippi Forestry Commission, the state agency created in 1926 to fight forest fires statewide.1,2 No date for the tower's construction has been recorded.1
A site visit on February 5, 2022 found the tower still standing but with its lowest flight of steps removed, and noted footings nearby from an earlier tower that had once stood on the same spot.1 Jason Johns nominated Woodland for the register, which listed it on July 12, 2022, under the numbers US 1676 and MS 39.1
Beyond that one documented visit, little else about the tower's working life has surfaced: no record yet found of who staffed it, what fires it watched for, or when it went up. It remains standing today, its early history largely unwritten.
