View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Allen Peak lookout house stood on a bare east-west ridge along the boundary of the Kootenai and Cabinet national forests, in Lincoln County, Montana.1,2 It lay about 31 miles south-southeast of Libby.1
The Coast and Geodetic Survey described the lookout house in 1940, placing the site 11 miles northeast of Trout Creek and 8 miles south-southwest of Raven Ranger Station.2
Firelookout.com dates an L-4 cab to 1934.1 A federal survey record for the station has two entries under the same name. One carries the code for a surface mark reported destroyed; the other carries a different code, so the entries alone do not show what happened to the house.3
Firelookout.com lists the lookout as gone, and the Forest Lookouts page says it was removed.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's state list agrees.4
No source we read describes what remains at the site today, or whether it is open to visitors.
A trail listing for Allen Peak gives its length as 1.5 miles, within the Kootenai National Forest, and says it can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by horse.5 The listing does not say whether the trail reaches the lookout site.
