View from the cab

What you see from the cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

The structure was moved. This view is from the position Firefinder shows for this record, at a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Antrim Point was a cleared top near the Bitterroot River, about eight miles north of Stevensville in the Bitterroot National Forest.1,2 A Forest Service survey station was set there in 1937, and the Forest Lookouts page dates the lookout site to the same year.2 The firelookout.com listing gives 1939 instead, when an L-4 cab was relocated there from Dutch Hill.1

The survey brass tablet sat in a concrete post under the center of the lookout tower, and the U.S. Geological Survey recovered it in 1957.2 An eight-foot R-6 flat cab replaced the L-4 in 1968.1

The named lookouts include Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Edmunds in 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ayres in 1946, and Ann Casselman from 1969 to 1971.1,2

The Forest Lookouts page says the lookout duties moved to Lookout Mountain in 1973.2 The National Historic Lookout Register and firelookout.com date the cab's move to 1974, five years after it was built at Antrim Point.3,4 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list still marks Antrim Point as gone.5

The cab now stands on Lookout Mountain, about 12 miles south of the West Fork ranger station, and the lookout there gets regular staff in fire season.1,3,4

We found no source that describes what remains at the original point today, or whether the 1937 survey tablet survives.
