View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Forest Service and Montana built a camp together on Baldy Mountain in 1917.1 In 1922, a newspaper item quoted on the Montana lookouts site reported that work had started on a lookout house near Plains.2

The cabin with a cupola came next. The register and firelookout.com both date it to 1928,1,3 but the Montana site dates a log-style cabin with a cupola to 1927.4

A 20-foot L-4 tower followed in 1949, according to the register and firelookout.com.1,3 The Montana site instead puts an L-4 house on a treated timber tower in 1957.4 The sources disagree on these dates.

A newspaper item from September 1936 said Maynard Johnson was stationed on the lookout.2

The register says a 30-foot treated timber structure replaced the 20-foot one in 1979, and that the lookout was removed in 1990.1 Firelookout.com gives the same 1979 and 1990 dates.3 The Montana site says an older structure was removed in 1961, after sitting beside the newer tower for several years.4

A photo log from July 2016 notes that concrete footings are still at the summit.5 It also suggests that a rock platform may have been the base of the 1928 cabin.5 The site is in the Lolo National Forest, about 11 miles north of Plains.3,5 No source says whether the summit is open to the public today.
