View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Benchmark Mountain is in the Flathead National Forest, about eight miles west of Polebridge, at 7,099 feet.1 The firelookout.com listing dates an L-4 cab on the peak to 1931.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the type as ground rather than tower.2

Forest Lookouts lists the site in Flathead County, under the Flathead National Forest, and notes that panorama photographs were taken there on September 9, 1935.3

The firelookout.com listing says the cab was destroyed in 1957.1 Forest Lookouts marks it removed, without a date.3 Both listings, and the association's list, show it as gone, but they disagree on how it ended: one says destroyed, the other removed.1,3,2

We found no source describing what remains on the mountain today, or whether the public may visit.1,3
