View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Big Creek Lookout stood in the Flathead National Forest, about 12 miles north of Whitefish in Flathead County, Montana, at an elevation of 6,430 feet.1,2 Firelookout.com dates it to 1933 and describes a 20-foot pole L-4 tower.1 Forest Lookouts gives its location code as 33N-21W-35, filed under Flathead County.2

Firelookout.com says the tower was destroyed in 1957.1 The Forest Lookouts site marks it "Removed," and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list reads "Tower Gone."2,3 The two accounts word the ending differently: destroyed in one, removed in the other.1,2
