View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Blue Ridge was a fire lookout in Missoula County, Montana, on the Lolo National Forest, about 14 miles east of Superior.1,2

The tower was a 40-foot pole L-4 design.1,2 Newspaper items reprinted by Forest Lookouts say that in April 1934 materials were ordered for ten new lookouts on the Lolo, one of them at Blue Ridge in the Frenchtown district.2 Firelookout.com says the tower was built in 1934.1 Forest Lookouts gives c.1936 instead.2 We use 1934 because it fits the spring order, although an order does not prove when the tower was finished.

In June 1935 the Missoulian reported that the Blue Ridge site was being used to train lookouts and smoke chasers.2 Firelookout.com dates the last staffing to 1955.1

After staffing ended, the tower stayed in use for training until it was torn down in 1979.1 Forest Lookouts marks it as removed.2

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether it is open to the public.
