View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Boulder Mountain is a former lookout site in the Kootenai National Forest, about twelve miles east of Yaak in Lincoln County, Montana.1 Firelookout.com gives its elevation as 7,058 feet.1 The Montana Lookouts county list places it under the same forest.2

Firelookout.com says a crow's nest and a log cabin a quarter mile east went up in 1921.1 A pole L-4 tower followed in 1933.1

The lookout was abandoned in 1958 and is now gone.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association list also shows the tower as gone.3

The one remnant the sources describe is the log cabin. Firelookout.com says it is still there, in ruins, a quarter mile east of the lookout.1 The note sits under the 1921 entry, but the page gives no date for when the cabin was seen in ruins. No source describes the tower site itself today or whether the public may visit, so ask the Kootenai National Forest before going.1
