View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Boyd Mountain rises to 5,349 feet about six miles northwest of St. Regis, in Mineral County.1 Both listings place it in the Lolo National Forest.1,2

The lookout was an L-4 tower that dates from the 1930s, according to the listings.1,2 The second listing gives the same decade and a parenthetical credit to Kresek, with no further detail.2 In general terms, a local history column says the L-4 was far and away the favorite live-in design. It says these cabs could sit on the ground or on pole or timber towers as tall as 100 feet.3

The listings disagree on how the tower ended. One says it was abandoned.1 The other says it was removed.2 A state lookout list marks it as gone.4

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the summit, or whether the site is open to visitors.1,2,4
