View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Crimson Peak, in Powell County, Montana, had a lookout about 11 miles northeast of Seeley Lake, at an elevation of 8,229 feet.1 Both lookout listings place it on the Flathead National Forest.1,2

The listing describes the cabin as a 10' wooden L-4 cab and dates it to the 1930s.1 It says the cabin was abandoned in 1956 and burned in 1959.1

A USGS name entry lists both the Flathead and the Lolo national forests as related terms, without saying which one holds the peak.3 The forest assignment therefore rests on the two lookout listings.1,2

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as gone.4 We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
