View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Dixie Peak lies 16 miles west-northwest of Thompson Falls, in the Kaniksu National Forest.1,2 The lookout was a gabled L-4 cab that sat atop rock piers.1,2

The cab was built in 1931. A Sanders County newspaper item from that October, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, said lookout houses were going up that season at Lookout Peak and Border Peak, and at Dixie Peak with John Larson in charge.3 The same page gives the site's survey location as 22N-32W-15.3

Firelookout.com and the Sanders County Ledger both say the cab was removed in 1955.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a gone lookout.4

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the peak today, or whether the summit is open to visitors.
