View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Elk Mountain is in Lincoln County, in the Kootenai National Forest.1 It lies about 28 miles east-northeast of Libby.2

The site was developed in 1923 with a 10-by-10-foot frame cab and a roof platform.1 In 1940 a 10-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up about a quarter mile southwest of the summit.1 The US Forest Service administers the site.1

According to the register, vandalism and decay have left the tower in ruins.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list instead marks the tower as gone.3 The two accounts word the fate differently, but neither describes a tower still in use.1,3

The register also mentions an L-6 cab about a mile northeast of the lookout, without saying whether it still stands.1 The site was added to the register on January 9, 2021.1 No source describes the summit today or whether visitors can reach it.
