Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Emery Hill sits at 5,406 feet, about five miles east of Hungry Horse, in the Flathead National Forest.1 The firelookout.com record describes a 30-foot L-4 tower dated 1932.1 A 1933 Flathead Courier item, quoted on a lookout history site, says 11 miles of road were planned to reach two lookout sites, one on Emory hill (the item's spelling) and one on Desert mountain.2 The same item says most of the crew was finishing a 1.5-mile stretch of Desert mountain road, clearing and grading, and predicts the work would help safeguard timber in the Coram experimental forest.2
The firelookout.com record lists the tower as gone in 1948, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list also marks it gone.1,3
None of the three cited sources says what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
