View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Flatrock sits in Mineral County, Montana, on the Lolo National Forest, about 10 miles northwest of St. Regis.1 The Fire Lookout website gives its elevation as 5,129 feet.1 The association's Montana list gives the coordinates as 47.40738, -115.23447.2

The first structure the website lists is a crow's nest from 1933.1 By 1941 the site had a 50-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab.1

The website says the tower was destroyed in the 1970s, without a more exact date.1 The association's Montana list marks the site as a tower that is gone.2

We found no source that describes what remains at the site today, such as footings or a foundation, or whether the public can visit it. Anyone planning a trip should ask the Lolo National Forest about access before heading out.
