View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Garnet Peak is a former Forest Service lookout in the Flathead National Forest, in Flathead County, Montana.1,2

The firelookout.com record dates an L-4 cab on the peak to 1936.1 A Coast and Geodetic Survey description from 1940 calls the structure a Forest Service lookout house and places it 12 miles northwest of Big Prairie Ranger Station.2 The firelookout.com record uses a different landmark, 24 miles south of Spotted Bear Ranger Station.1 The two accounts do not share a reference point, so a map check is worth doing before anyone heads out.

The cab was abandoned in 1956 and is now listed as gone.1,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground lookout.3 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site, or whether the public can reach it.
