View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Goat Peak was a lookout in Lincoln County, Montana, in the Kootenai National Forest, about 5 miles southwest of Troy.1 The Fire Lookout website gives its elevation as 5,416 feet.1 The association's Montana list gives the coordinates as 48.40648, -115.97373.2

The lookout there was an L-4 cab, which the website dates to 1933.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground-level structure, not a tower.2

The website calls the lookout gone but gives no date for its removal.1 The association's Montana list also marks it gone.2

Wikipedia says a different Goat Peak, in the North Cascades of Washington, is topped by a Forest Service lookout that is in operation.3

We found no source that describes what remains at the site today, such as footings or a foundation, or whether the public can visit it. Anyone planning a trip should ask the Kootenai National Forest about access before heading out.
