View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Gold Creek Point is a former Forest Service lookout in Missoula County, on the Lolo National Forest, 12 miles southwest of Seeley Lake.1

A lookout was already on the point by 1921. A Missoulian notice from that September, quoted by the Forest Lookouts site, describes it as in use for years and says it was being remodeled.2

The firelookout.com record dates an L-4 cab on the point to 1933.1 The sources we read do not say whether that cab replaced the earlier lookout.

The cab was destroyed in 1953.1 The sources do not say how.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground lookout, with the status Gone.3 We found no source that describes what, if anything, is left on the point today, or whether it is open to visitors.
