Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Half Dome Crag is the site of a former fire lookout in Pondera County, Montana, on the Lewis and Clark National Forest, about 13 miles south-southeast of East Glacier.1 Firelookout.com gives its elevation as 8,091 feet.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the lookout as gone.2
Sources do not agree on when the lookout began. A November 1924 newspaper, quoted on a Montana lookout history page, reports new trails built to the Half Dome lookout, which suggests one already stood by then.3 Firelookout.com lists a camp in 1928 and an L-4 cab in 1933.1 The L-4 was a prefabricated 14-by-14-foot lookout house, built from 1929 on.4 A November 1932 newspaper says two lookouts were built that year to standard Forest Service plans, one of them on Half Dome Mountain at a cost of about $600.3
Local newspapers name the lookout men for several seasons. John Sabol was assigned to Half Dome in 1935, and John Anderson was listed for the post in 1939 and again in 1940.3 In August 1968 Half Dome Lookout Dave Dellwo found a fire on the east face of Little Plume Mountain, about 10 miles northwest of Heart Butte.3
The lookout kept a telephone link with Glacier Park and Lubec, according to a 1932 forestry report.3 Water was hard to come by. An October 1935 newspaper says water had to be packed up the mountain in former years, a distance of 14 miles with a 3,000-foot rise, but that year the lookout man got enough for household use from nearby snowbanks.3
Firelookout.com says the lookout was abandoned in 1973.1 Weebly lists it as removed, without a date.3 A 1963 Coast and Geodetic Survey description places a survey mark at the center of the base of a 10-by-20-foot lookout house.3 That size does not match the standard 15-by-15-foot R-6 cab that firelookout.com lists for 1961, and no source explains the difference.1,4
No source describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today. Hiking Project lists a trail called Half Dome Crag Trail #119 and names the Lewis and Clark National Forest office as land manager.5 That listing describes a trail, not the lookout site, so it does not show whether any footings or other remains can be seen. Check with the forest office before heading out.
