View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

History

Then and now

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hilger was a lookout on the Helena National Forest in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, about 12 miles north-northeast of Helena.1,2 The firelookout.com page dates it to the 1950s and calls it an L-4 cab.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as a ground lookout rather than a tower.3 The page gives its elevation as 5,287 feet.1 The association's list places it at 46.771 N, 111.934 W.3

The same page says it was abandoned and is now gone.1 The association's Montana list also marks it as gone.3

No source I read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the public can visit it.
