View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Inspiration Point is a lookout site in the Flathead National Forest, about 24 miles east-northeast of Polson, Montana.1 The page places it in Lake and Flathead County, at an elevation of 7,629 feet.1
The page calls it a cabin and dates its L-4 cab to 1930.1 An L-4 cab is a 14-by-14-foot frame cab that a lookout could live in, and the register notes it could sit atop a tall tower.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists this site as a ground structure rather than a tower.3
The page says the lookout was abandoned in 1943.1 The association's Montana list shows it as gone.3
We found no source that describes what, if anything, is left at the site today. None of the pages we read say whether the public may visit, so check with the Flathead National Forest before going to look for it.
