View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Kid Mountain lookout was a cabin rather than a tower.1 Firelookout.com describes it as an L-4 cab that stood in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, built in 1930 to replace an earlier camp.1 Montanalookouts lists the Flathead National Forest as the agency.2
Firelookout.com says the cabin was still there in 1956 but has since gone.1 Montanalookouts lists the site as removed, but gives no date.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list marks the cabin as ground gone.3
A 2021 Flathead Beacon feature on the forest's historic buildings says its lookout network, which once had an important role, has been almost entirely taken apart.4 That article does not mention Kid Mountain by name.4
We found no source that describes what, if anything, is left at the cabin site today, or whether the public can visit it.1,2
