View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Landowner Mountain sits in Mineral County, Montana, about 12 miles south of Superior, in the Lolo National Forest.1,2 The firelookout.com page says the site was developed in 1930 with a log cabin and a platform tower.1 A 30-foot tower with an L-4 cab went up in 1934 and replaced the earlier cabin.1,2

In April 1934 the Missoulian reported that materials for ten new lookout towers on the Lolo had been ordered, and Landowner Mountain was named as one of the locations.2

Several people who staffed the site are named in the sources. In September 1935 two Missoulian items named Erwin as the lookout on Landowner peak and reported that Lester Ellingson had come back from the post.2 Carl Creagar left in August 1939 to work as lookout there, near Alberton, according to the Ravalli Republican.2 The firelookout.com page lists Clarence Hoepfner in 1957, Alfred Oberst in 1958 and Jim Freer in 1959.1

The site was abandoned in 1967, according to firelookout.com.1 In 2000 a wildfire destroyed both structures on the ridge.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list still marks the tower as gone.3 A Missoulian story on the loss near Superior has a subhead saying ground crews could not safely work the site.4

No source we read describes what remains on the ridge today, or whether the public can reach it. Anyone planning a visit should check with the Lolo National Forest first.
