View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Fire Lookout Tower listing places Lookout Mountain in Park County, 22 miles east-northeast of Gardiner.1 Rex's Fire Lookout Page puts it in the Gallatin National Forest and gives its location code as 8S-12E-34.2

The listing gives 1955 and describes a 20-foot R-6 tower of treated timber.1 It gives the elevation as 9,870 feet.1 It also carries an "Emergency 1969" entry, which it does not explain.1

The Forest Fire Lookout Association places the tower at 45.09569, -110.22535 and lists it as gone.3 Montana has other lookouts with this name, including one in Ravalli County, so the county and coordinates are needed to tell them apart.3

No source we read describes what remains at the site today, or whether the public can reach it.1,2,3
