View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Lucky Point is a former lookout site in the Kootenai National Forest, about nine miles west-southwest of Yaak in Lincoln County, Montana.1 The firelookout.com page dates it to 1934 and describes a 10' pole L-4 tower built that year. It lists the site at 5,179 feet.1

The page's heading reads "R.I.P. 1934-?" and notes that the tower has been down for an unstated number of years.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list also gives the tower as gone, at 48.77900 north and 115.88546 west.2

A Lincoln County list names Lucky Point under the Kootenai National Forest, with a township and range and no other detail.3

We found no source that describes what remains at the site today or whether it is open to visitors. Check with the Kootenai National Forest before going.
