View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Martin Divide lookout stood in the Flathead National Forest, about 15 miles south-southeast of Fortine in Flathead County, Montana, at an elevation of 5,604 feet.1,2

Firelookout.com dates the lookout to 1930 and describes it as a wooden L-4 cab listed at 10 feet.1 The Montana list kept by the Forest Fire Lookout Association places the site at 48.57015, -114.73683 and classes it as a ground lookout.3

The same page says the cab was abandoned in the 1940s.1 Both the firelookout.com page and the Montana list now mark the lookout as gone.1,3

None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the public can reach it. Firelookout.com and the Forest Lookouts page both place the site in the Flathead National Forest.1,2
