View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount Bushnell, once called Lookout Peak, sits about eight miles south of Thompson Falls, on the Sanders and Mineral county line.1,2 A gabled L-4 cab went up there in 1931.1,2 Among live-in designs, the L-4 cab was by far the most popular, a wood frame cab with windows on every side.2

The lookout was destroyed in 1958.1,2 The Sanders County Ledger and Forest Lookouts agree on both dates.2,1

Today, a 2021 Sanders County Ledger hiking story says the base of the old lookout still sits at the top of the peak.3 The same story describes a hike to Mount Bushnell, and Forest Lookouts places the site under the Lolo National Forest.3,1 No source we read describes a standing structure there.
