View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Firelookout.com calls Olson Peak a fire lookout cabin, and says its L-4 cab dated from the 1930s and is now gone.1 The site lies roughly 26 miles southwest of Augusta, in Lewis & Clark County, Montana, at 8,881 feet.1

The forest is listed two ways. Firelookout.com names both the Lolo and Helena National Forests for the site, while Forest Lookouts names only the Helena National Forest, at township 17 north, range 9 west, section 21.1,2

No source checked describes what, if anything, remains of the cab or the summit today, or whether the public can visit.
