Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Prairie Reef Lookout sits about 30 miles west-northwest of Augusta, on the highest point of a bare-topped mountain in the Lewis and Clark National Forest.1,2 The site was first developed with a camp lookout in the 1920s.3 An L-4 cab went up in 1931,3,1 and a newspaper item dated 9 July 1931 says the Forest Service was building a station there, with materials carried in by pack horse.2

The present cab is an R-6 flat cab, built in 1968.3,1 The register and firelookout.com both give the 1931 and 1968 dates, but they describe two different cabs on the site, so the dates do not contradict each other.3,1

Staffing has been part of its story. A 1940 newspaper item mentions a lookout at the station, and in August 1984 a University of Montana student served there as a volunteer lookout.2 The register says the present cab is staffed every summer.3 A KTVH feature says the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest staffs five lookouts, Prairie Reef among them, though the copy I read carries no date.4

I found no source that says who built the 1968 cab or what it cost. None of these sources reports a fire or a move at the site. They describe it as a working lookout rather than an abandoned one.3,4

None of the sources I read describes a road or trail to the site, or says whether the public may visit. Check with the Forest Service before planning a trip.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1968
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1931

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
